Archeology in Croatia - Dubrovnik - Croatia - October 19 to 23, 2009

mission effectuée

In the company of Irena Radic, conservationist for the marine heritage sites of Croatia, we will visit various archaeological sites in the region. The country wishes to protect newly revealed marine sites which have remained untouched until now, and lacked the money to be searched. Local archeologists have started using a system of cages which allow divers to observe the sites without getting too close and causing damage. This system is a good example of heritage conservation, but it should not lead to the disregard of these wrecks, which must be treated in order to be protected.

We will also go to explore a large deposit of dolia. These great jars were once used by the Romans to transport various goods. We will explore the site to see if there is a wreck hidden beneath them. Finally, Irena will take us diving just off the coast of Dubrovnik, on a recently discovered wreck from the 16th century.
